Caught in a Russian Trap: Inside Evan Gershkovich’s 16‑Month Detention
In a rare BBC Today interview, the Wall Street Journal reporter who spent 16 months behind bars in Moscow recounted how he was “lured into a trap” by masked men at a dinner, was arrested, charged with espionage, and later freed in a high‑profile swap.
“I realized I had been lured into a trap when masked men surrounded me at a restaurant in March 2023 and arrested me,” Gershkovich said.
The U.S. journalist maintained that the charges were false, a stance shared by his employer and echoed by President Biden, who declared that bringing him home was his highest priority. His imprisonment coincided with escalating tensions over press freedom in Russia, especially after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
On 27 May 2024, after 16 years of legal limbo, Gershkovich was released as part of a prisoner exchange that also saw Russian special‑forces officer Maksim Kadyrov returned to Russia. The swap, negotiated behind closed doors, fueled debate over the use of journalists as bargaining chips.
