Poland Claims Russian Helicopter Briefly Crosses Airspace
Polish authorities say a Russian Mi‑8 helicopter crossed from the Kaliningrad exclave, intruding roughly 300 metres into Polish airspace for 42 seconds before being detected and tracked by radar.
The incursion occurred at 11:08 local time (09:08 GMT) north of Braniewo, a town near the Polish‑Russian border. Poland promptly scrambled fighter jets and kept its ground forces on high alert.
Polish military officials warned that the incident "shows Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence," hinting at a potential pattern of hybrid provocations aimed at destabilising European NATO members.
In recent weeks, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused Russia of planning drone and missile strikes along NATO’s eastern flank, while French President Emmanuel Macron echoed concerns about Russian hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure.
Russia denied immediate commentary, and President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Moscow has no plans to attack NATO states. By contrast, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of a different conflict if Europe were to fight Russia, calling it "short.”
The incident comes amid a broader series of alleged Russian hybrid actions across Europe, from drone strikes on German airports to suspicious fires at defence facilities in countries such as Italy, Estonia and Bulgaria.
Analysts note that these incidents, while seemingly isolated, could be part of a larger strategy to test NATO’s resolve and to exert pressure on countries supporting Ukraine.
