French officials investigate if a malicious act caused train derailment

Officials in northern France are investigating if the derailment of a passenger train on Friday evening was the result of a malicious act.

Prosecutor Sébastien Gallois said a fragment of rail had been found on the tracks – the reasons for its presence remain unknown.

Local media reported 186 passengers were on board the train operating between Rouen and Caen in Normandy.

Forty‑four were treated for injuries, including an 18‑year‑old woman who was air‑lifted to hospital in a critical condition.

Around 140 firefighters and emergency teams were deployed near Cléon just south of Rouen shortly before 20:00 local time.

A passenger described the event: “Suddenly there were a few jolts and then after about three seconds it got stronger and stronger.” The window panels partially shattered and debris from the track entered the carriage, terrorising riders.

The Rouen prosecutor’s office confirmed the train driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
