Kenya confirms its first Ebola death as outbreak spreads

A Kenyan national who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years arrived in Nairobi and, after testing positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, succumbed to the virus days later. The patient had previously been treated for the disease in multiple hospitals across Congo before returning home.

Health Minister Aden Duale reported rapid arrival, routine airport screening, and subsequent hospital transfer. Despite these measures, the individual died after intensive care, marking Kenya’s first Ebola fatality.

The DR Congo outbreak, the second most lethal in history, has already claimed more than 4,000 lives this year. Experts warn that cross‑border travel may accelerate spread to other African nations.

Kenya is intensifying surveillance at entry points, reinforcing contact‑tracing protocols, and engaging international partners for rapid response. The Kenyan government urges citizens to adhere to public health advisories.
