Zimbabwe Tycoon Wicknell Chivayo and Wife Killed in Helicopter Crash

Six people died when a helicopter crashed in the Marondera rural area on Wednesday evening, 17:00 local time. Prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were confirmed dead by family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo, who told state broadcaster ZBC that the family was “devastated by the tragedy.”

Chivayo was a key figure in Zimbabwe’s business world, known for lucrative government contracts and a flamboyant public persona. He had long denied allegations of wrongdoing in his dealings, which often attracted scrutiny for ties to African presidents and the awarding of national contracts.

Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the aircraft had six occupants, including two pilots, and that it had taken off from Gandami in Chikomba en route to a rural home project when it crashed at Kudenga Farm about 40 minutes after departure. The exact cause of the crash is yet unknown; emergency services, including police and ambulance teams, responded promptly to the scene.

Government spokesman Nick Mangwana confirmed the tragedy on X, noting that there were no survivors. Chivayo’s death stunned the region, prompting condolences from Kenyan President William Ruto and other African leaders who had previously met with him. Ruto described him as a “dear friend” and praised his energy and enthusiasm for the continent’s promise.

The incident has revived discussions about safety standards in Zimbabwe’s aviation sector, and investigators are probing the circumstances that led to the fatal accident. As the investigation continues, the nation mourns the loss of a controversial yet influential figure and his wife.
