27 Dead in Two Mass Shootings Across South Africa
Two separate gun attacks in South Africa on Saturday and Sunday have claimed 27 lives, the latest tragedy in a country already struggling with high rates of violent crime.
The first incident occurred on Saturday night when eight gunmen stormed a bar north of Johannesburg, opening fire on patrons and inside the venue before setting two vehicles ablaze and fleeing with the gunmen. Thirteen men and four women were killed.
The second attack took place early Sunday morning outside an entertainment complex in a township near Cape Town. Ten people were killed on the spot and another five died in hospital, bringing the total to 27 fatalities.
Police have yet to identify a motive and have not made any arrests. South Africa remains one of the world’s most dangerous nations for gun violence, with more than 60 murders recorded daily across its 62‑million population.
The spate of shootings has sparked fears that gang‑related violence linked to drug trafficking and illegal mining is deepening. President Cyril Ramaphosa has labeled organised crime as the “most immediate threat” to the nation’s democracy, and in February he deployed the military to help police in the most violent regions.
