Judge Blocks Trump’s White House Ballroom Project Amid Preservation Concerns

A US judge has temporarily halted President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom construction project, ruling that proper procedures were not followed before the building project began. The ruling comes after the White House was sued by The National Trust for Historic Preservation.

I have concluded that the National Trust is likely to succeed on the merits because no statute comes close to giving the President the authority he claims to have, said Judge Richard Leon, who was appointed by a Republican president.

Trump has criticized the ruling on his social media site, claiming that the project is on track and will be the finest Building of its kind anywhere in the World. The Trump administration argued the plan was more economical than renovating the East Wing and asserted that changes have historically been made to the White House by previous presidents.

Leon's ruling emphasized, The President of the United States is the steward of the White House for future generations of First Families. He is not, however, the owner! He added that construction must cease until Congress authorizes it.

The lawsuit claimed the White House violated legal protocols by starting construction without filing plans with the National Capital Planning Commission and without conducting an environmental assessment. Additionally, it argued that Trump was infringing on the US Constitution, which reserves property management rights to Congress.

The East Wing, which was originally constructed in 1902, was demolished in October to make way for Trump’s multimillion-dollar ballroom. It was initially designed to host 500 guests but has since expanded to accommodate 1,350 people.

The estimated cost of the project is $400 million, purportedly funded entirely by private donors.

Reacting to this setback, Trump remarked: The National Trust for Historic Preservation sues me for a Ballroom that is under budget, ahead of schedule, being built at no cost to the Taxpayer, and will be the finest Building of its kind anywhere in the World. He also criticized the preservation group for its previous lawsuits against his renovations elsewhere.
