Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his partner Jodie Haydon, becoming the country's first leader to marry while in office.

The pair tied the knot in the capital, Canberra, on Saturday afternoon local time - the day after the final sitting of the parliamentary year.

We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends, Albanese stated.

The couple became engaged on Valentine's Day last year, with the proposal and wedding reception both held at Albanese's official residence, The Lodge.

Until the big day, the wedding plans had been kept quiet due to security concerns. Attending were Ms. Haydon's parents as well as Albanese's son from his previous marriage. The couple's dog Toto acted as the ring bearer, and they walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder's Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours). A video shared on their official social media accounts shows the celebration as guests showered them with confetti.

At the reception, the couple danced to Frank Sinatra's The Way You Look Tonight, and custom beer cans featuring their engagement image were part of the festivities. They plan to honeymoon in Australia next week, although their plans were adjusted post-Albanese’s election win in May.

Albanese, 62, and Haydon, 47, initially met at a business dinner in Melbourne in 2020. Ms. Haydon has been a prominent figure in Albanese's public life, appearing alongside him during his electoral campaigns and at significant events, including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Albanese has also recently made history as the first prime minister to get engaged while in office.
