Welcome to Cake Picnic, Sydney edition. This viral event has already sold out dates in cities like San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles, generating excitement as it lands on Australian shores. After a successful Melbourne event featuring 1,600 cakes, Sydney was next as over 500 cake enthusiasts gathered at the Royal Botanic Garden.

I had no idea that I could ever go on tour for cake, laughs Cake Picnic founder Elisa Sunga, who combined her passion for baking with her tech career at Google.

Two years ago, Sunga's casual gathering request quickly snowballed, attracting around 200 attendees who brought nearly 200 cakes, igniting a worldwide cake-sharing movement. As she recalls, It feels unreal. I had no idea that thousands of people all over the world would be as excited as I am.

At the Sydney event, cakes were required to measure at least 20cm wide and 7.5cm tall. A colorful assembly presented a feast for the eyes, featuring everything from life-sized edible swans to exotic flavors like jackfruit and palm sugar. Among the bakers, some were seasoned professionals while others were home bakers excited to showcase their creations.

Participants described the event as a welcome break, with Hilary Lindgren noting, There are just so many negative things happening in the world at the moment that it's nice to do something like this.

Admiration for innovative cakes displayed the communal spirit that Sunga aimed to cultivate. From traditional to unusual, offerings included a focaccia cake topped with pesto and feta icing, embodying the joyful creativity of baking.

The essence of the Cake Picnic is about togetherness, where individuals from different generations and backgrounds come together in celebration of something lighthearted and delicious. As Sunga emphasizes, It's just fun to see everyone coming together, enjoying not only the cake but each other's company.

While navigating a tech career, Sunga relishes in the balance of creativity baking brings to her life. I want to have my cake and eat it too, she adds, highlighting the sweet success of an event that allows people to connect over their shared love for cake.
