On Thursday, Barack and Michelle Obama greeted former US presidents, global leaders and crowds of locals as the Barack Obama Presidential Center opened on Chicago’s South Side.
The 19.3‑acre campus in the historic Jackson Park neighbourhood blends the formal look of a museum with the open, playful vibe of a community centre. A branded reading room and a full‑sized library sit beside a playground, a basketball court, a recording studio and a public library branch.
“It is a living celebration of community,” Obama declared, urging visitors to leave their phones, talk, laugh and learn together. The site is designed to spark civic conversation and creative collaboration, a place where people can feel ‘neighbourly’ and confront the divisions that have crept into society.
Michelle's comments, which prompted her husband to wipe away tears, highlighted his professional and personal achievements and his enduring optimism. She invited attendees to “put away your phones” and “talk, laugh and cry” together, encouraging a shared sense of belonging.
The centre’s opening also offered a historic replica of the Oval Office as a landmark attraction, where visitors could touch history up close. The public library on campus provides a vibrant meeting place for all ages, while the playground guarantees that kids literally grow up right in front of the statue of Barack and Michelle waving.
Former federal officials such as Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau, as well as entertainers such as John Legend, Common, Eddie Vedder, Beyoncé and Stevie Wonder, appeared on stage, adding a cultural soundtrack to the ceremony. The lineup showcased music’s role as a universal language that brings communities together.
Although former President Donald Trump was not invited, the Obamas used subtle references to his policies to underline the centre’s mission to strengthen democracy.
Attendees praised the choice of the South Side for its historic and cultural significance, noting that the centre could not have been better placed elsewhere. Through its combination of museum, library and community space, the Barack Obama Presidential Center captures the vision of a public institution that invites all people to learn, play, share and create.
