Cape Verde Celebrates Historic Draw with Spain – Joyful Nationwide Reaction

When Spain and Cape Verde entered the World Cup arena, most expected a blowout favoring the Spanish giants. Instead, the match ended 0-0, a result that sparked unprecedented jubilation in 500,000‑strong Praia.

The entire city roared to the beat of vuvuzelas, chants and horn blasts as fans clad in blue jerseys celebrated with a sense of national fervour not seen since the country’s qualification for the tournament in 2026.

An Emotion Overwhelming the City

"It was emotional," said Isa Conceição, a local supporter who stood in a packed fan zone. "Holding a football behemoth to a draw feels like a victory for all of us," she added, wearing a cap that showcased the national flag.

Other visitors, such as a Congolese fan on her inaugural Cape Verde trip, echoed their excitement: "Their speed and heart were amazing; I thought we would lose to Spain, but they beat us down to a tie!"

Music, Flags and Uncontested Pride

The official World Cup anthem, “nos óra dja txiga” – meaning “our time has come” – threaded through the streets, accompanied by chants and flags that filled balconies, rooftops and private cars.

Across neighbourhoods, the national colour blue and red were proudly displayed, and people burst into vocal celebrations when the referee's whistle signalled the games final.

Looking Ahead

Cape Verde now faces Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. Whoever wins matters less than the sense of unity and hope instilled by the squad’s heroic display.

Even if the team can’t progress beyond the group round, many citizens proudly claim the draw will forever elevate their national image in the world of football.
