A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city, Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across the nation grappling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon. Police reported that the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three suspects, one of whom opened fire before fleeing the scene on foot. The motive remains unknown, and no arrests have yet been made.
DJ Warras was a prominent radio and TV presenter as well as a podcaster in South Africa. According to local police chief Fred Kekana, he was attacked outside Zambesi House near Carlton Centre, where he had been overseeing the installation of security systems. CCTV footage revealed a man in a security uniform, with dreadlocks, who shot Stock before escaping.
The DJ reportedly tried to run after being shot but collapsed nearby; he had an unused firearm on him, but nothing was taken during the incident. Evidence gathered at the scene has prompted the police to call for public assistance in identifying the suspects.
His family, reeling from the tragedy, expressed their grief and shock, with his sister Nicole Stock emphasizing his role as a voice for many in the nation.
