Fatal Shark Attack Claims Diver in Western Australia

A 35‑year‑old diver was killed after a suspected 4.5‑m (14.8‑ft) shark bit him during a spearfishing trip off Michaelmas Island, south‑east of Perth. Authorities report the attack occurred at 11:25 local time (03:25 GMT) on Saturday.
The victim was transported by boat to shore, where paramedics were unable to revive him. Police will prepare a report for the coroner, according to local media.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) confirmed it is assisting police and local authorities, and it urged residents to report any shark sightings.
The incident comes less than a month after another fatal shark attack in Western Australia, when Steven Mattaboni, 38, was attacked by a 4‑m (13‑ft) shark near Horseshoe Reef, north‑west of Rottnest Island.
Shark attacks around Australia are reportedly more frequent than in many other parts of the world, although fatalities remain relatively rare. Popular swimming and surfing spots often implement measures to guard against attacks.
