Sydney’s Coogee Beach has returned to the spotlight after a 34‑year‑old mother, Leah Stewart, suffered a severe shark bite on 13 June. Multiple bites on her arms and legs caused catastrophic blood loss, necessitating an arm amputation and a critical ICU admission.

After six days of surgeries, doctors reduced Stewart’s medication so she could briefly exit an induced coma. Her brother, Joshua, posted on social media, calling the moment “a miracle,” and that it exceeded everyone’s expectations. She whispered “I love you” to her mother and partner, both by her bedside, before responding to a question from her daughter.

Stewart remains in intensive care with more operations scheduled for the coming weeks. While the full scope of her recovery is uncertain, her team and family view the brief awakening as a critical first step toward eventual healing.

Australia has experienced a surge in shark incidents this year, with four attacks over 48 hours in January alone, including a fatal case involving a young boy at a Sydney beach. Earlier last month, two fatalities occurred when a Queensland spearfisherman and a Western Australian father were bitten by large sharks.

The incident underscores the growing concern over shark activity around Australian coastlines and the importance of safety measures for beachgoers and swimmers.
