Pope Leo XIV clarified that he was not attempting to debate Donald Trump after his recent comments regarding 'tyrants' who prioritize military spending over humanitarian efforts. This statement came during a flight to Angola, amidst a tour of Africa.
The Pope explained that his remarks were scripted two weeks prior to Trump's criticisms, stating, 'it was looked at as if I was trying to debate, again, the president, which is not in my interest at all.'
Trump had publicly attacked the pope, labeling him 'terrible for foreign policy' following the pontiff's concerns over the escalating conflict with Iran.
Vatican officials, including US Vice-President JD Vance, supported the Pope by highlighting the complexities often obscured by media narratives.
Throughout his speech, the Pope condemned the cycle of devastating violence, asserting, 'the masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild.'
The Pope's visit underscores the significant Catholic population in Africa, where over 288 million adherents reside, reflecting the church's role on the continent.
