LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A tragic incident unfolded at a suburban Atlanta hotel where a man being questioned by police shot two officers, leading to one fatality and another in critical condition.

The confrontation occurred on Sunday morning when the Gwinnett County officers were dispatched to investigate a report of fraudulent use of a credit card. Upon arrival, they were led to the suspect's hotel room, where he invited them inside.

Police Chief J.D. McClure provided details during a news conference, indicating that after a brief conversation, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews, opened fire on the officers.

Officer Pradeep Tamang, only 25 years old, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital, while Officer David Reed was reported to be in serious but stable condition.

McClure emphasized the ongoing dangers police officers face, saying, “This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement faces daily.”

The incident is now under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which will also determine any charges to be filed against Andrews. As of now, it is unclear whether he has retained legal representation.

This incident highlights the long-standing issues surrounding law enforcement and public safety, attracting attention from state officials, including Governor Brian Kemp, who expressed his condolences and support for the fallen officer's family and the entire police department.
