BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — James “Jimmy” Gracey, a college student from Illinois, was found dead after going missing during a break in Barcelona, according to Spanish authorities.
Gracey's body was discovered on Thursday afternoon in the Mediterranean Sea, close to the beach where he was last seen early Tuesday, leaving the Shoko nightclub.
A spokesperson for the regional police in Catalonia indicated that all signs point to Gracey's accident, with an autopsy slated for further investigation.
The University of Alabama student had not returned to his accommodation after departing for the club around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, alarming his family who later reported his absence. His phone was found by police.
The Gracey family expressed their heartache in a statement, requesting prayers and privacy. Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend...we are struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss, they shared.
Barcelona, a popular tourist destination, is typically regarded as safe, especially against theft, which is often a greater concern in large U.S. cities.
Gracey's aunt described him as "just a great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest." The University of Alabama also conveyed its condolences, stating the community is heartbroken by his untimely death.
This tragic incident highlights the perils that can accompany adventures abroad, sending shockwaves through local and university communities alike.
