Tragic Identification of LaGuardia Plane Crash Pilots
The two pilots killed when an Air Canada plane crashed into a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport have been identified as Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther.
Local media reported Forest was 30-years-old and from Québec, while Gunther graduated from Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto in 2023.
The incident, which happened at 23:40 local time on Sunday (03:40 GMT on Monday), injured 41 people who were taken to hospital and shut down the New York airport until Monday afternoon.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administrator Bran Bedford expressed condolences, stating, These were two young men at the start of their career, so it's an absolute tragedy that we're sitting here with their loss.
Forest learned to fly bush planes in Saguenay in 2018 and was hired by Jazz Aviation in December 2022. His great aunt shared memories of his dedication to flying since a young age.
Gunther, also hired at Jazz following his graduation, was remembered fondly by Seneca Polytechnic, which announced lowered flags in his honor following his passing.
The flight, operated by Jazz Aviation, originated in Montreal. The collision involved a fire truck on the runway, raising concerns about Air Traffic Control protocols and equipment failures. Investigators are looking into the events leading up to the crash, emphasizing the need for upgrades to the air traffic control system.
One flight attendant, Solange Tremblay, survived the incident after being ejected from the aircraft, and witnesses have described her miraculous survival.
This tragedy has sparked discussions about safety in air travel, and further investigations are expected.
An air traffic controller was heard warning the fire truck seconds before the crash, complicating the narrative surrounding responsibility and safety measures.
