Clay Fuller is projected to have won Georgia's runoff election to replace former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch ally of Donald Trump who resigned earlier this year following a split with the president.

On Tuesday night, Fuller emerged victorious against Democrat Shawn Harris, according to CBS News. His win ensures that the strongly conservative district remains in Republican hands and reinforces the party's delicate majority in the House of Representatives.

Fuller, who serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Georgia Air National Guard, will fill the remainder of Greene's term until January.

This runoff follows a special election held in March where Harris fared slightly better than Fuller, due largely to a fragmented Republican field that prevented any candidate from achieving a majority, necessitating Tuesday's runoff.

To secure his congressional seat beyond this term, Fuller must quickly begin campaigning for the midterm elections set for November.

Fuller is closely aligned with Trump's policies, particularly regarding illegal immigration and mass deportation efforts, and he gained significant traction in the Republican primary largely due to Trump's endorsement. Political scientists note that Trump's strategy in supporting Fuller may have been aimed at appealing to moderate voters while still energizing the party's base.

With the Democratic Party identifying this seat as a key opportunity, prominent figures like former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg have engaged in campaigning efforts for Harris. Nevertheless, political experts highlight that Fuller’s victory reflects a consistent Republican stronghold in Georgia’s 14th congressional district.
