Argentina threatens legal action against the UK over Falkland Islands oil exploration.
President Javier Milei has demanded the British-backed Sea Lion oilfield project halt within two weeks, or face international arbitration.
The Sea Lion venture, led by Israel’s Navitas Petroleum and Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration, boasted licences from the Falkland Islands and could produce an estimated 1.7 billion barrels of oil.
Milei warned that, if the UK does not wind down the project, Argentina would invoke the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg to challenge the “illegal plunder” of its resources.
The president also slammed the UN as “a useless organisation,” and called its failure to act on Falkland sovereignty a sign of “parasitic bureaucracy.”
British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting replied that Argentina lacks the military capacity to seize the islands by force, underscoring the fragility of the dispute.
