A Virginia man having an affair with his family’s Brazilian au pair was convicted Monday of murdering his wife and another man, whom prosecutors believe was lured to the house as a scapegoat.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, claimed he stumbled upon Joseph Ryan attacking his wife, Christine Banfield with a knife on February 24, 2023, leading him to shoot Ryan. Eventually, the au pair, Juliana Magalhães, shot Ryan as well.

However, prosecutors argued Banfield fabricated the story, presenting a theory that suggested the murders were part of a premeditated plot to eliminate Christine. Evidence soon revealed that Banfield and Magalhães were involved in a romantic affair, complicating the narrative further.

Magalhães, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2024, testified against Banfield, admitting they had impersonated Christine on a fetish website to lure Ryan to their home. The plan included a staged scene that portrayed Ryan as an intruder attacking Christine.

Banfield’s defense attorney, John Carroll, challenged the credibility of Magalhães’ testimony, suggesting her cooperation with police was motivated by a desire to reduce her own potential sentencing. Banfield labeled the prosecution’s claims as “absolutely crazy” during his own testimony.

Evidence presented during the trial included dissension within the police regarding the investigation’s direction, as an officer had indicated there was reason to believe Christine was behind the social media account used to deceive Ryan.

In her closing arguments, prosecutor Jenna Sands directed the jury’s attention to the multitude of evidence supporting their case, including expert analyses that suggested evidence of Christine’s blood on Ryan’s hands.

After nearly nine hours of deliberation over two days, the jury reached a verdict, and Banfield now faces a potential life sentence. Meanwhile, Magalhães awaits sentencing.
