U.S. lawyers for Luigi Mangione, the alleged shooter of UnitedHealthcare chief Brian Thompson, have told Judge Gregory Carro they will pursue a psychiatric defence at his state murder trial. The line of argument asserts that Mangione suffered from extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing, possibly reducing the charge to manslaughter.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both federal and state courts over the December 4, 2024 shooting of Thompson in Manhattan. A judge has declared court records detailing the defence’s strategy will be unsealed to maintain openness.

Mangione, a Ivy‑League graduate from a wealthy Maryland family, is also charged federally with stalking offences that could cost life in prison. Federal murder and firearms charges were dropped earlier this year.

The state case is set to open September 8, with jury selection already scheduled. The outcome will hinge on whether jurors accept the psychiatric defence claims.
