The German public‑service broadcaster ZDF last week deleted the opening segment of a nightly news report that linked the narrative of a “hunt” for migrants to a statement supposedly made by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

The brief introduction, aired during a broadcast about the Knife attack in northern Belfast, suggested that a “racist mob” was targeting migrants following a post shared by Musk on his platform X.

ZDF themselves admitted the wording was “misleading” and issued a clarification before removing the passage entirely, adding a transparency notice citing “Tommy Robinson” as the originator of the call for protests.

Musk responded on X, warning that "legal action is being taken against ZDF for their outrageous lies" and demanded a cease‑and‑desist, which was sent through a German law firm.

The incident follows earlier violence in Belfast where a knife attack left a victim severely wounded and fueled unrest, prompting police charges and a court remand for a Sudanese national.

This episode underscores the broader debate about the role social media plays in amplifying disinformation, with critics pointing to Musk’s influence in spreading anti‑migrant narratives and inciting division in Europe.

ZDF’s decision to remove the introduction and issue a correction reflects an effort to uphold journalistic accuracy amid rising scrutiny of media sensitivity around migration and conflict.
