Trump says he has 'obligation' to sue BBC over speech edit

US President Donald Trump has asserted that he feels an obligation to sue the BBC regarding the editing of his speech during a Panorama documentary. During an interview with Fox News, Trump described how his January 6 speech was butchered, alleging that the editing misled viewers.

This marks Trump’s first public declaration on the issue since his legal team demanded a $1 billion compensation from the BBC unless they issue a retraction and apologize. A BBC spokesperson responded, stating that they are reviewing the communication.

BBC chair Samir Shah had previously admitted to a judgement error concerning the edit, which Trump claims accused him of inciting the Capitol riot.

In response to whether he will proceed with the lawsuit, Trump emphasized the necessity for accountability in media, insisting that the BBC defrauded the public with their presentation of his speech. The initial letter from Trump's legal counsel was sent to the BBC, demanding a retraction by a specified deadline this week.

Amid the legal threats, internal issues at the BBC have surfaced, including resignations from key BBC executives following the fallout from the controversial documentary.
