The bodies of two Italians who drowned in a scuba diving accident in the Maldives last week have been brought to the surface, local officials have informed. They were retrieved from the third chamber of the underwater cave by the specialist divers from Finland after a two-hour operation, Mohamed Hossain Shareef, a Maldivian government spokesperson, stated.

The two bodies were being transported to the capital, Male, for identification. They were among five individuals who tragically lost their lives due to the accident, with two bodies still unaccounted for. The first body, identified as Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor and boat operations manager, was recovered shortly after the accident.

Complications arose during search efforts, including the death of a Maldivian rescue diver on the weekend, underscoring the perilous conditions within the underwater caves. The area, known as shark cave, reaches depths of up to 60 meters (197 feet), complicating rescue operations amid low visibility and confined spaces.

Finnish divers collaborated with local authorities to recover the two bodies, while operations are set to resume to locate the final two divers. The Maldivian government had previously granted permission for dives, although the specific cave was not included in the initial proposal.

This tragedy has spurred discussion surrounding the safety and regulation of dive expeditions, with officials emphasizing the importance of adhering to established diving protocols and safety measures.
