Tragic Diving Accident Claims Lives of Five Italians in the Maldives
A scuba diving tragedy has unfolded in the Maldives, resulting in the deaths of five Italian nationals, including a professor and her daughter. The Italian foreign ministry confirmed that the divers perished while attempting to explore aquatic caves at a depth of 50 meters in Vaavu Atoll.
Among the victims were Monica Montefalcone, an ecology professor at the University of Genoa, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, research fellow Muriel Oddenino, and marine biology graduate Federico Gualtieri. The fifth victim, Gianluca Benedetti, served as the diving instructor.
The Maldives military has reported that one body has been found, while the remaining four are believed to be trapped within a cave submerged about 60 meters underwater. The area is marked as high-risk, prompting divers with special equipment to aid in the recovery mission.
Italy's foreign ministry is coordinating with local authorities in the search efforts while 20 other Italian nationals aboard the Duke of York yacht, from which the divers departed, are confirmed safe and receiving assistance.
This incident is being regarded as one of the worst diving accidents in the Maldives, a destination known for its coral islands and underwater beauty. The divers had entered the water on Thursday morning and did not return, raising alarms among the crew.
Initial investigations suggest the cave where they were diving features three large rooms and narrow passages. A dive master indicated that oxygen toxicity may have contributed to the event, particularly at such depths where improper oxygen mixes can lead to lethal conditions.
Monica Montefalcone’s husband, Carlo Sommacal, expressed disbelief at the incident, underscoring her qualifications and commitment to safety in her diving practices.
As of now, search and recovery operations continue, with the next dive scheduled to explore additional sections of the cave. Further findings are anxiously awaited by family, friends, and colleagues who mourn the loss of these individuals.
