Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has died after suspected armed robbers opened fire at the bus carrying his team, Berekum Chelsea, returning from a fixture.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its 'profound shock and deep sorrow', sharing its 'heartfelt condolences' to the 20-year-old's family, teammates, and all who work for the team.
Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league, added the GFA.
According to Berekum Chelsea, the team bus was targeted as it returned from a Ghana Premier League match on Sunday, when they were ambushed in a planned attack by masked men wielding guns and assault rifles.
The attackers blocked the road to halt their passage, initiating gunfire as the driver tried to reverse away from the threat. Players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
The suspects remain unidentified as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
The GFA has called for all necessary measures to ensure justice is served, emphasizing that it is in contact with relevant authorities and the club.
The association stated plans to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for competitions in Ghana to avoid such tragedies in the future.
Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January, with his tenure expected to last until the end of the premier league season. He made 13 appearances and scored two goals for the club.
