Two people have been killed and 10 others injured after a car crashed into a crowd near Caen train station

Local officials reported that a vehicle deliberately rammed into pedestrians opposite Caen station on 26 August 2026, resulting in two fatalities and 10 injuries.

"The car deliberately rammed into pedestrians opposite the station," said local prefect David Clavière, adding that seven of the injured were in critical condition.

A man was later arrested after authorities launched a major emergency response across Normandy.

Mayor Aristide Olivier stated that investigators are working to understand the driver’s motives, noting a fight had broken out between two groups before the crash.

Security official Bruno Coutanceau said, "For the moment, we are not dealing with a terrorist motive, but the investigation is only just beginning."

All victims were men aged between 17 and 40, according to AFP.

The suspect, a 26‑year‑old Russian-born man, was arrested around 20km away in Ouistreham.

Mayor Olivier added that the car was tracked by the city’s CCTV network. The suspect was previously unknown to intelligence services and had only been known for traffic offences.

Social media footage shows crowds gathering around police cars and ambulances, with a large area cordoned off.

Several injured are receiving treatment in a nearby hospital’s emergency ward, per the Calvados local administration.

Police are leading the investigation with detectives from Caen’s Specialised Crime Division.
