A Sydney Swans incident results in police referrals amid sexual assault investigation
Several players from the Sydney Swans were referred to police over an alleged sexual assault that took place at a hotel in East Melbourne early Sunday morning.
The incident followed a victorious night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The club confirmed the event, noting it had notified the Australian Football League.
"We're extremely shocked and disappointed that this has taken place, and that the players have found themselves in this situation," Chief Executive Matthew Pavlich said at a press conference on Monday. "There's going to be lots of speculation, but given it's a police matter right now, that is all we can say."
Pavlich declined to comment on any arrests or the exact number of players involved. A Victorian Police spokesperson stated the investigation began at Wellington Parade hotel in the early hours and is ongoing, with circumstances yet to be established.
The AFL confirmed Sydney Swans had reported the matter to the league, which is currently under Victoria Police investigation. Further details are anticipated as the inquiry progresses.
