Lille’s Student Protest Unites Thousands on Place de la République

Thousands of students have gathered on Place de la République in Lille, campaigning against what they say is chronic under‑investment in French high schools.

BBC Europe correspondent Nick Beake reports from the square, where a firm police cordon keeps order but the demonstration has stayed peaceful so far.

The rally is part of a nationwide wave in France that has seen clashes between demonstrators and authorities in several cities; protests in Lille, however, have avoided violence.

Organisers argue that the main demand is for governments to increase funding for secondary education, citing failures in classroom infrastructure, teacher shortages and uneven resource distribution.
