An Israeli air strike on a town in southern Lebanon has killed six people, including three paramedics, according to Lebanon's health ministry. This tragic event coincides with the announcement from the US stating that both countries have agreed to a 45-day ceasefire.
The health ministry reported that a fourth paramedic sustained critical injuries after a civil defense center was attacked in the town of Harouf. The BBC has reached out to the Israeli military for comments on the incident.
On Friday, the US State Department disclosed that Israel and Lebanon had come to a tentative agreement to extend their fragile ceasefire following two days of negotiations in Washington, DC.
President Donald Trump had initially announced this truce on April 16, but exchanges of fire have continued between Israel and Hezbollah since then.
Earlier this week, Lebanon's health ministry declared that Israeli airstrikes had resulted in 22 fatalities, including eight children, across southern Lebanon.
We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establish genuine security along their shared border, stated State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
The US announced plans to reconvene the political negotiations in June, along with launching a separate security track at the Pentagon on May 29, involving military delegations from both nations.
Israel's Ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, stated the talks were frank and constructive. Meanwhile, Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed a desire to garner support from Arab and international allies to strengthen Lebanon's negotiating position.
Despite the ceasefire, reports of exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel have been almost daily occurrences. Israel has intensified its military operations in southern Lebanon, claiming the strikes target Hezbollah fighters and their infrastructure, while Lebanon's health ministry has condemned the strikes as attacks on civilians.
Southern Lebanon, a stronghold of the Shia community, continues to face Israeli bombardment, resulting in over one million people being displaced across Lebanon, primarily from conflict-affected southern regions.
The current hostilities began on March 2, merely two days after the US and Israel conducted a joint military operation against Iran.
Since then, Hezbollah has launched rockets towards Israel, prompting extensive Israeli responses, including airstrikes and a ground invasion of southern Lebanon. The death toll has greatly increased during this latest conflict, with Lebanese authorities reporting at least 2,896 casualties and Israeli officials reporting 22 military and civilian deaths on their side.
As the situation develops, both nations are seeking pathways to a lasting resolution amidst a backdrop of military conflict and humanitarian crises.
