Israeli airstrikes kill six in Gaza, including Al Jazeera cameraman
A strike by the Israeli defence forces on a residential building in a Gaza camp on Saturday killed six people, one of whom was 26‑year‑old Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Wishah. Health authorities and rescue workers identified another death as a child. The Israeli army said Wishah was a Hamas operative and a sniper, accusations that were denied by Al Jazeera and questioned by international observers.
According to the Gaza‑run health ministry, whose figures the UN considers reliable, 1,007 people have been killed by Israeli operations since the ceasefire that entered into effect last October. Al Jazeera spokespersons condemned the “heinous crime” of targeting journalists and stressed that the killings amount to a “flag‑rant violation of international law.”
In addition to Wishah, two other residents were killed during the same strike on the home of a Bureij refugee camp. The Israeli forces maintained that they were part of Hamas, while local civil‑defence and hospital reports indicated some of them had no affiliation with the militia.
Elsewhere, a strike on a house in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood took the lives of four family members, including children, according to local hospitals and witnesses. Victims were transported to Al‑Shifa Hospital for burial procedures, a scene captured in the provided photo.
Contrasting reports of violations from both sides of the conflict suggest the ceasefire’s fragility. While Israel promised a “flood of humanitarian aid,” the UN warns that 81% of buildings were damaged and 70% of the population still needs proper shelter. The latest shift in the war’s dynamics highlights the dire situation for civilians caught in the crossfire.
This incident reinforces the urgent need for monitoring and accountability mechanisms to protect journalists and civilians. The international community remains wary of a resurgence of violence and the potential collapse of the current ceasefire agreement.
