Delhi Fortified Ahead of Gen Z‑Driven Protest

Hundreds of police, paramilitaries and road blockades seal Delhi ahead of the massive Gen Z‑driven ‘cockroach’ protest demanding electoral reforms from CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

The Cockroach Janata Party, a satirical online movement, has called for a large demonstration on Saturday at the famed Jantar Mantar square. The party seeks the removal of CEC Kumar over allegations of manipulating voter rolls through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme, which has seen 130 million names struck off the electoral register.

Despite the Election Commission’s insistence that the revisions are legitimate, opposition parties, farmer organisations and student groups have rallied behind the CJP’s demands. Police denied the organisers permission to protest, citing a short notice period and past failure to comply with legal directives.

In response, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke promised to march to Jantar Mantar “come what may”, even if threatened with arrest or violence. The ground conditions in Delhi thus resemble a fortified city, with metal barricades on major thoroughfares, metro stations shut down and trains cancelled to limit protestors’ movements.

The confrontation has intensified after the police broke up demonstrations by opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and other MPs over the SIR controversy. Videos of police restraining Gandhi on a bus have gone viral, further inflaming public opinion.

Whether the protest will succeed in changing electoral policy or the status of CEC Gyanesh Kumar remains to be seen. International observers watch closely as Delhi braces for what many view as a watershed moment in India’s democratic process.
