Volodymyr Nikulin, a seasoned Ukrainian police officer, has seen his life upturned as he confronts the realities of war in eastern Ukraine. His belongings consist of a battered car marked by shrapnel, a minimal set of clothes, and essential supplies for survival. The tumultuous situation necessitates a life of simplicity and readiness to uproot at a moment's notice, marked by the growing threat of Russian advances in the Donbas region.

Currently residing in Sloviansk, a city 15 miles away from heavy conflict, Nikulin lives with uncertainty. He recounted how he quickly packed his life for relocation multiple times—having fled Donetsk in 2014, Mariupol in 2022, and Myrnohrad this summer—as Russian forces advanced with increasing intensity. While he attempts to establish a routine, the sound of distant bombings serves as a relentless reminder of impending danger.

“Who knows where I’ll be in a few months?” lamented Nikulin, expressing the unpredictability of his current lifestyle as he navigates life as both a police officer and an evacuee. Despite the struggles, he holds a bittersweet fondness for his "lucky car," which has reliably aided him in escaping perilous situations.

Nikulin’s experiences mirror the plight of millions of Ukrainians displaced by war. His narrative reflects grief over lost homes and neighbors, all while fulfilling his duty as a police officer, facilitating safe passages for others and assisting journalists in documenting the horrors occurring in Mariupol. As the situation evolves, his story is a poignant reminder of endurance and sacrifice in a conflict that continues to uproot lives and define a nation.
