Six‑year‑old Raseel al‑Balawi of al‑Mawasi camp in Gaza has slipped through more than twenty surgeries since a single Israeli air strike hit her tent in late July, according to witnesses who followed her every day.
The strike, which officials say was launched from a helicopter, left the child with severe injuries that now require regular cuts, debridement and antibiotic treatment to keep infections from spreading.
Israel’s military denies any knowledge of the attack, describing it as “unintended” and expressing “regret” for civilian harm.
BBC Eye Investigations has spent the summer shadowing Raseel, documenting how the continual bombardment and crumbling health infrastructure in Gaza strain the local doctors who try to keep her alive.
