Devastating Tornadoes and Wildfires Claim 37 Lives in the US
A surge of extreme weather wreaks havoc across the Midwest and South, prompting widespread destruction and loss of life.
At least 37 individuals have tragically lost their lives as a result of a catastrophic wave of tornadoes that swept through various regions of the United States, particularly impacting the Midwest and South. Missouri was declared the hardest-hit state, enduring the brunt of the tornadoes beginning Friday night, with a reported 12 fatalities. The storm system also fueled powerful winds in Texas and Kansas, leading to severe dust storms that prompted vehicle pile-ups, claiming an additional dozen lives.
This extreme weather front affected an area inhabited by over 100 million people, leading to the ignition of nearly 150 wildfires in Oklahoma, further complicating the dire situation. In addition to Missouri, fatalities were recorded in Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi. Currently, several areas across Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina are under flood advisories.
With more than 320,000 individuals left without power as of Sunday evening, according to PowerOutageUS, states of emergency have been declared in Arkansas, Georgia, and Oklahoma. Missouri's Governor Mike Kehoe described the destruction as "staggering," citing the obliteration of hundreds of homes, schools, and businesses. He also noted significant devastation in Butler County, where a tornado rendered a residence "unrecognizable."
The disaster created further chaos in Oklahoma, where wildfires driven by winds reached speeds of 83 mph (133 km/h) caused substantial destruction, burning through 170,000 acres and destroying around 300 structures, including a farmhouse belonging to Oklahoma's Governor Kevin Stitt.
In Kansas, a serious dust storm led to a catastrophic multi-vehicle crash involving over 55 vehicles, resulting in the loss of at least eight lives. Texas faced a similar fate, as a different dust storm caused a harrowing accident with approximately 38 cars, leading to four fatalities. In Mississippi, tornadoes claimed the lives of six people, while Alabama's storms resulted in three deaths, including an elderly woman. Arkansas, too, reported three fatalities alongside 29 injuries from the disasters that have uprooted countless lives.
In response to the overwhelming devastation, US President Donald Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard in Arkansas to assist in recovery efforts, urging the public to pray for those affected by this unprecedented climate event.
