HOUSTON (MetaWorld.Media) — A powerful tornado wreaked havoc in residential areas north of Houston on Monday, dashing through neighborhoods with ferocity that damaged over 100 homes. The tornado led to roofs being torn off, garages displaced, and windows shattered, as reported by authorities in Texas.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported as estimates indicated that many residents sought refuge in their homes, some hiding in closets to weather the storm. The intense winds also knocked out power to more than 20,000 customers at one point.
Miriam Harris, a local resident recounting her experience, said, I had the door and I was trying to hold it shut so that nothing would end up in the house. It was so forceful. Unfortunately, she suffered roof damage, downed trees, and a mangled holiday light display as the tornado tore through Klein, approximately 25 miles north of Houston.
In the aftermath of the storm, officials from the Klein Fire Department managed reports of numerous gas leaks, while crews worked to clear fallen trees blocking the roadway and removing debris surrounding homes and businesses.
Earlier on Tuesday, heavy fog hindered a full assessment of the tornado's damage, but weather forecasts suggest calmer conditions are expected in the area. Although parts of southern Texas may face heavier rain and severe thunderstorms during one of the busiest travel periods of the Thanksgiving holiday, communities are beginning their recovery efforts.
Photos and drone videos shared on social media illustrate the extent of the destruction, with rooftops stripped bare and debris littering the roads. Five members from the Houston Fire Department were dispatched to cut and remove the chaos left by the storm.
The National Weather Service had previously issued tornado watches across southeastern Texas, including Houston, and severe thunderstorm warnings in the region.
