French President Emmanuel Macron has taken a strong stance against the recent destruction of a memorial tree dedicated to Ilan Halimi, a Jewish man murdered in 2006. The tree, which had stood for 14 years in Épinay-sur-Seine, was felled on Wednesday, stirring outrage and prompting Macron to describe the incident as “an attempt to kill him a second time.” He assured that every means would be employed to identify and punish the individual responsible for this hateful act.

Macron's declaration followed Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez's confirmation of an ongoing investigation aimed at finding the perpetrators. Halimi's brutal kidnapping and murder by the Barbarian gang sparked widespread outrage across France, as he was targeted for his Jewish identity. His remains were discovered in horrific condition, highlighting the severity of the crime, which involved a failed ransom attempt of €450,000 ($600,000).

The olive tree's destruction has been attributed to increasing antisemitism, with Macron stating that France "will not forget this child of France who died because he was Jewish." French Prime Minister François Bayrou echoed this sentiment, attributing the crime to "antisemitic hatred" and emphasizing the country's long-standing commitment to combatting such deadly ideologies.

This is not the first instance of vandalism related to Halimi's memory; in 2019, a previous memorial tree was also reported to have been chopped down, and monuments commemorating his life have faced repeated attacks in the years since.
