Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, announced they would not participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on Tuesday due to unexpected travel issues and claims of harsh treatment. The team was stranded overnight at Al Abraq airport after their flight was diverted from Benghazi, about 230km away. According to William Troost-Ekong, team captain, the squad feels the situation is a form of "mind games." The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) said they were abandoned at the airport without any assistance or explanation from Libyan officials. This led to further tensions following their claim that Libyan officials faced similar issues when they traveled to Nigeria. The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) denied any foul play and mentioned routine logistical challenges could cause such disruptions. While Nigeria holds the top position in Group D, the threat to forfeit the match in Libya, which stands last in the group, presents a significant issue. Efforts for governmental intervention are ongoing, with security concerns in Libya further complicating the situation.
