In brief
The Brazilian leader, who was slated to attend the Brics summit, will instead participate virtually after medical advice to avoid long-haul flights.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has postponed his trip to Russia due to a head injury sustained on Saturday at his residence. The 78-year-old was set to fly to the Russian city of Kazan for the Brics summit—a key gathering of influential developing nations including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. A leading hospital in Brasília, where Lula was treated, recommended he refrain from long flights for the time being, despite being cleared to resume regular activities. Medical reports indicated that the president received five stitches for a laceration at the back of his head but was later discharged. Lula’s office confirmed he will now attend the summit via video conference. His cancellation means he will miss a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose own attendance at the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil has been canceled, citing concerns over the possibility of "disruptions" at the conference. Putin's avoidance of the summit ties back to an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for his arrest, which would complicate matters should he leave Russia. This year's Brics summit in Kazan is scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday, maintaining discussions between these significant emerging economies.
