In an unusual twist, Sweden’s Gender Equality Minister Paulina Brandberg has prompted the government to create "banana-free" zones due to her extreme fear of the fruit, known as bananaphobia. Leaked emails obtained by local news outlet Expressen reveal that staff are instructed to ensure the absence of bananas during official gatherings, including VIP luncheons.
Brandberg, who expressed her unusual fear on social media in 2020—though those posts have since been removed—has described her phobia in personal terms, stating it manifests as a "sort of an allergy" that provokes anxiety and nausea. In response to inquiries about her condition, she confirmed that she is undergoing professional treatment for it.
A fellow politician from the Social Democratic Party, Teresa Carvalho, has publicly aligned herself with Brandberg, stating she also experiences bananaphobia. Carvalho remarked, “We may have had many tough debates about conditions in working life, but on this issue we stand united against a common enemy,” emphasizing the bond shared between those who face this distinctive challenge.
While such phobias are rare and the reasons behind them often unclear, experts suggest that they frequently originate from experiences in childhood. As officials take steps to accommodate Brandberg's needs, the topic sheds light on the various mental health issues that can affect individuals in public office, ultimately inviting broader discussions on support systems for those in leadership roles.
