Tragic Suspension of Boxing in Ghana After the Death of Ernest Akushey
All boxing activities in Ghana have been suspended following the death of a super-middleweight just 11 days after a bout in Accra.
Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, passed away at the age of 32 on Tuesday.
The exact cause of death remains to be confirmed; however, preliminary indications suggest it may be related to internal injuries sustained during his recent fight against Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12.
In a statement, the National Sports Authority described this nationwide suspension as a necessary step to protect lives, uphold the integrity of the sport, and ensure its future.
In addition, plans have been put forth to implement a five-year strategy aimed at establishing safer and more professional boxing standards that align with global practices.
This marks the second loss of a professional fighter in Ghana in just six months, reigniting crucial discussions about safety standards in the sport. In March, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju collapsed during a match with Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu and died shortly thereafter.
Boxing holds significant popularity in Ghana, having produced legendary figures such as two-weight world champion Azumah Nelson.
