Nigerian actor, content creator and influencer Odira Nwobu has died in South Africa aged 43, as confirmed by his lawyer and the Actors' Guild of Nigeria.
His death sent shockwaves through Nigeria, where fans and colleagues expressed their grief online for the Nollywood star known for his comedy and youthful appearance. Nwobu starred in over 60 films throughout his career.
Details surrounding his death are currently unclear as his family has yet to publicly comment. A coroner's report is awaited, according to his lawyer Chukwujiekwu Chukwudi.
Emerging videos depicting Nwobu's lifeless body incited a wave of distress across social media on Monday. Chukwudi recounted that an ambulance was called to Nwobu's hotel room in Benoni, near Johannesburg, after he was found "gasping for breath."
After enjoying a night out with friends, Nwobu was reportedly alone when he returned to his hotel room. Paramedics attempted to revive him using a defibrillator, but he tragically succumbed before reaching the hospital.
Born in Enugu, Nigeria in 1982, Nwobu entered the film industry right after secondary school with his role in Joseph the Dreamer. Despite his success, he felt constrained by typecasting, leading him to create content on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where he garnered extensive followings.
His passing comes while he was in South Africa to promote a Nigerian-owned real estate company, accompanied by fellow influencers and his lawyer, who is also the legal advisor for the trip.
Nwobu was single and had no children. Earlier this year, he survived a road accident that had previously stirred premature rumors of his death.
Fans and fellow actors remember him for his dedication and the joy he brought to many through his work. More updates on this situation will be reported as they develop.
