MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota activist charged during an anti-immigration enforcement protest released video footage of her arrest on Friday, responding to a manipulated image posted by the White House that depicted her as a victim of distress.
The incident began when the White House shared a picture on its social media portraying Nekima Levy Armstrong crying with her hands restrained, alongside a statement branding her as a far-left agitator.
In contrast, Levy Armstrong’s video, captured by her husband, Marques Armstrong, shows her composure while being approached by federal agents during the protest held at a church where an ICE official is also a pastor. The activist explained her position, stating, We have to put you in handcuffs echoed her concern about the display of political theatrics surrounding her arrest.
The footage contradicts the emotions conveyed in the White House image, affirming Levy Armstrong’s stance against the narrative created about her. Raised concerns about the Trump administration’s manipulation of media portrayals were highlighted as she engaged with agents during the arrest.
Reflecting on her situation, Levy Armstrong asserted, This is a significant abuse of power, addressing the growing tensions and misuse of authority she encountered. Her spokesperson shared her recorded message from jail, where she stated, We are being politically persecuted for speaking out against authoritarianism, fascism, and the tyranny of the Trump administration. The Department of Homeland Security had not responded to requests for comments regarding the matter as of the release date.
The developments highlight critical issues surrounding political narrative construction, media ethics, and the experiences of activists in today's socio-political climate.
