MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Authorities are actively searching for Morgan Geyser, a Wisconsin woman known for her involvement in a notorious stabbing case related to the fictional character, Slender Man. Geyser, who is now 23, was last seen at around 8 p.m. Saturday with an adult acquaintance and has since cut off her electronic monitoring device. Madison police issued an alert urging anyone with information to call 911.
Geyser was placed in a group home this year after being granted conditional release from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, where she had been since 2018 following her guilty plea to attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Her case gained national attention when Geyser and her then-friend, Anissa Weier, attacked their classmate, Payton Leutner, in 2014 in a misguided attempt to appease Slender Man, a horror figure they believed would harm their families.
Leutner survived the brutal stabbing that shocked the community and called into question the influence of internet culture on young minds. Weier also faced legal repercussions for her involvement and was granted release from a psychiatric facility in 2021.
As Geyser's disappearance unfolds, it raises critical questions about mental health care for individuals who have committed serious offenses as minors and the ongoing societal implications of their actions.
