BULVERDE, Texas (AP) — A 15-year-old student shot a teacher at a Texas high school and then fatally shot himself, authorities said Monday.
No other injuries were reported during the shooting at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde. The Comal County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed any motives for the shooting.
The injured teacher was transported to a hospital in San Antonio, but no updates on her condition have been released. The male student died on the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot, according to the sheriff’s office.
The school went into lockdown at around 8:34 a.m., shortly before classes were scheduled to begin at 8:55 a.m.
Eyewitness accounts detail loud bangs and ensuing chaos, with students describing hearing multiple shots before their teachers instructed them to take cover.
Later, students were evacuated to a nearby middle school where parents anxiously waited in long lines to reunite with their children, many expressing shock and concern over what to tell them regarding their return to school.
One parent shared their worries about their child’s reaction, particularly due to their autism, expressing that the return to classes would be a challenging ordeal.
The high school, part of the Comal Independent School District, emphasizes academic excellence and skills development in fields such as science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Since its opening in August 2020, it has expanded to include grades nine through twelve and currently has around 260 students enrolled.
