Tumbler Ridge mass shooting: What we know so far
In a devastating incident, the remote community of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, Canada, witnessed a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and an adjacent residence, resulting in the tragic loss of nine lives and leaving 25 others injured. This event marks one of the deadliest gun attacks in Canada's history.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported receiving an emergency call about an active shooter around 1:20 PM local time. A swift police response followed, deploying officers within two minutes and issuing shelter-in-place directives to local residents as lockdowns were enacted at the secondary school and nearby elementary school.
According to police reports, not only was the shooter’s body found at the school, but a total of six additional victims were confirmed deceased at the school premises. Meanwhile, additional searches in the area uncovered two more victims at a nearby home.
The identity of the shooter has been withheld, yet it has been confirmed that the individual died of self-inflicted injuries. Authorities are diligently investigating the shooter’s possible motives and any connections to the school.
Community leaders and residents expressed their grief, with Tumbler Ridge's mayor reflecting on the tight-knit bond within the town as he expected many of the victims to be acquaintances.
