A man has been arrested after injuring two people in an early‑morning stabbing attack at Edmonton’s Nanaksar Gurdwara in Canada.
Officials say the assault inside the sprawling Sikh temple unfolded around 05:00 local time on Friday. Police found no motive yet and have not identified the suspect’s name.
The incident follows last week’s police investigation into threatening calls made to two other Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, underscoring a spike in anti‑Sikh hostility across the country.
Police received their first report on the highway at 04:49 and, about fifteen minutes later, a call about a stabbing inside the temple. Acting Inspector Eric Stewart said the suspect entered the Gurdwara and tried to access the prayer area, only to be confronted by staff.
“The confrontation escalated, and two male patrons were stabbed,” Stewart told a press conference. “Thankfully, witnesses intervened quickly and detained the attacker.”
Both victims—a 75‑year‑old man and a 51‑year‑old man—were not seriously injured and are in stable condition. They were described as worshippers, with no additional details released.
The 27‑year‑old suspect, known to police, has a documented history of violent attacks dating back to 2015. He was released from a federal prison in Alberta the day before the incident and failed to report to a designated halfway house in Edmonton.
Charges remain pending while investigators determine whether hate crime motives are involved. Edmonton Police Chief Warren Driechel urged the public to remain patient as the suspect’s motivations are clarified but acknowledged growing concerns about hate crimes.
“These global tensions and local polarization can manifest locally,” Driechel said. “We must call them out when they occur; silence is unacceptable.”
The World Sikh Organization said a Sikh scripture inside the temple was desecrated, a claim Police are examining. The Gurdwara has been closed to the public while the investigation continues.
Calgary’s mayor, Jeromy Farkas, condemned the prior threats, calling them “utterly disgusting” and stressing that gurdwaras are places of hospitality and inclusivity.
