OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — John Beam, Oakland's celebrated former football coach and featured in the Netflix series Last Chance U, tragically passed away on Friday, just a day after being shot on campus at Laney College.

Authorities reported the incident as a targeted attack, leading to the prompt arrest of 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr., who was apprehended at a nearby commuter rail station with the weapon used in the shooting.

The news of Beam's death sent shockwaves through the Oakland community. Mayor Barbara Lee remembered him as a giant who dedicated his life to mentoring youth, including her own relatives.

“For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family,” stated Lee, as a vigil was held outside the hospital where Beam fought for his life.

Police confirmed that the shooting occurred before noon on Thursday and highlighted the role of surveillance technology in capturing the suspect's movements leading up to the crime. Irving had a history of involvement with Laney College, having previously played football at a high school where Beam once worked.

Following the shocking incident, Beam’s former players and friends took to social media to express their sorrow. The impact he had on countless athletes demonstrates his legacy as a father figure and mentor beyond just sports.

As the community processes this tragedy, Mayor Lee expressed the pressing need to address the gun violence crisis plaguing Oakland, as Beam’s shooting follows another recent incident at Skyline High School.

We must come together to ensure our children and educators are safe in their schools, said Lee.

John Beam's family has requested privacy during this painful time, emphasizing the overwhelming support they've received as they mourn a loving father, grandfather, and friend.
