ATLANTA (AP) — A British immigrant who served in the U.S. Navy has been charged in a series of deadly shootings that have shocked the Atlanta suburbs and drawn national attention.
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, is accused of killing two women, including a Department of Homeland Security employee, and wounding another man in a spree that left communities reeling. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin condemned the violence as acts of pure evil, highlighting concerns over the recent citizenship granted to Abel under the Biden administration.
Multiple Attacks in Early Hours
The assaults occurred early Monday morning across Decatur, Brookhaven, and Panthersville. The tragedy began when 31-year-old Prianna Weathers was discovered shot near a Decatur restaurant around 1 a.m. in critical condition. While she was rushed to the hospital, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Another victim, a 49-year-old homeless man, was shot near a Brookhaven grocery store around 2 a.m. He remains hospitalized in serious condition, police confirmed.
Later in the morning, authorities found Lauren Bullis, a 40-year-old DHS employee, shot and fatally wounded while out walking her dog. Her death has devastated her family and colleagues, with many remembering her dedication and warmth.
The Perpetrator's Background
Adon Abel's military service records indicate that he joined the Navy in 2020, serving in the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron in Coronado, California. He has previously faced legal troubles, pleading guilty to assaulting police officers while stationed in California. More alarming is his past, which includes a conviction for sexual battery.
This history raises serious questions about the screening process for citizenship, particularly for individuals with violent criminal records. Investigators are delving into the circumstances surrounding Abel's citizenship granted in 2022, as they investigate the motivations behind the gruesome attacks.
The killings have sparked widespread debate over national security and immigration policies, illustrating the complexities of navigating these critical issues in contemporary society.
